(A unique technique in a prosthetic dentistry)

INTRODUCTION:
The concept of using vacuum to fix the bridge on the gingiva is relatively old. Dentists started the experiments using this principle in the beginning of the last century. Many unfortunate attempts have been tried to make this idea a practical reality because finding the right material was always the main obstacle. All the materials used like metal, plastics and ceramics caused irritation and inflammation for the underlying tissues. Eventually, all these problems have been solved as the System ZX-27(Thermo glass plastic material) has been invented. It is a neutral, chemical resistance material that has no reaction with any substances in the oral cavity. It is very flexible at the melting temperature (1560-1600 C). It has the ability to take the shape of any structure at that temperature with the smallest details.

TDealing with the glass abutment system is quite easy clinically i.e. for the dentist as it follows the same steps of preparation for conventional bridges. However, the lab procedure is of more complicated nature to have the glass abutment accurately placed on the gingival seat. Accordingly, we have emphasized on quality control by arranging special workshops for the dental technicians to fully understand all the aspects of this system and to which they will be certified / qualified to do this job the best way possible.

As a matter of fact, the natural teeth move within their sockets in response to the mastication forces. Such movements end up in bone apposition and resorption as a part of periodontal structures' functions. The studies showed that; the glass abutments (ZX-27) produce 1000 to 10000 micro movements per day - with maintaining proper and stable vacuum - that massages the gingiva and stimulates the osteoblastic activity to generate and save the bone. The radiological tests proved that the thickness of the bone under the glass abutments will be improved by time. The micro movements of the glass abutments also help to stimulate gingival cells growth and as a result fix the underneath tissues.
